Odessa : the pearl of the Black Sea

Odessa is one of the largest cities of Ukraine, it is located on the northwest coast of the Black Sea, between the deltas of the Dnieper and the Dniester, about 260 km from the Romanian border. You can go to Odessa by various means of transport: by sea from the ports of the Black Sea from the Mediterranean ports, the route Kiev (the distance of 1374 km from Moscow, 489 km from Kiev) , Romania via Kishinev (border post Léouchény is 260 km).

The city stretches 50 kilometers along the Gulf of Odessa, from the village of Louzanovka east to the town of Sukhoi Liman west. Odessa was founded in 1794 on the site of the Turkish fortress of Haji Bey taken in 1789 by Russian troops commanded by the great strategist A. Suvorov. Subsequently, the city has always somehow been “window” of Russia on the South Seas. From 1819 to 1859 Odessa was a free port and the third largest city in Russia with regard to its economic importance.

Greek and Bulgarian patriots Odessa entant used as basis in their struggle for national liberation against the Turkish yoke. These traditions had their influence on the development of the revolutionary movement in the late nineteenth century, when Odessa became an important industrial town. Today, Odessa is an important industrial center of Ukraine. The port of Odessa is a first class base of the passenger fleet Black Sea. The whole port of Odessa region also includes the modern commercial port.

The city has many research institutes including the main one being the Institute of Ophthalmology and therapy named after Academician Filatov, this institute is known worldwide and is often called “Filatov Institute” simply. The University named after I. of Mechnikov was founded in 1865.

The city has six theaters, including the Opera and Ballet existing since 1887 and is well known throughout the world. Philharmonic predates it: it operates since 1848.
